World Waveski Surfing Titles : Day 2

C'est sans nul doute l'événement le plus attendu de l'année. Le rendez-vous est donné à Durban du 26 avril jusqu'au 4 mai aux meilleurs compétiteurs internationaux. Trois ans après ceux de Santa Cruz au Portugal, qui avaient été un véritable succès, c'est pendant une dizaine de jours que chacun tentera de s'envoler vers les finales.

Dimanche 27 avril

C'est encore sous le beau soleil sud-africain, mais de petites conditions, que le rendez-vous était donné à 7h30 pour un débrief. Finalement la compétition est reportée à 9h et ce ne sont pas les Open initialement prévus qui ouvriront cette nouvelle journée mais les catégories Juniors, Seniors, Ondines et New Age. 

Chez les New Ages, six de nos français concourraient : Pablo Arrouays, Coralie Jousset, Paul Jouet, Simon Guastella, Virgile Humbert et Clément Guilbert, répartis de la façon suivante, où les deux premiers de chaque série passent au tour suivant et les perdants vont aux repêchages.

Heat 1 : Pablo Arrouays - Coralie Jousset - Stefano Bellotti

Heat 2 : Andre Burger - Paul Jouet - Adolph Van Zyl - Simon Guastella

Heat 3 : Virgile Humbert - Clément Guilbert - Sam Jones - Bradley Cawcutt

 

Pablo se qualifie pour le tour suivant mais Coralie va en repêche. La bataille s'est opérée entre notre canaulais et l'italien Stefano Bellotti, mais c'est sans surprise que Pablo domine cette série en scorant deux vagues à plus de 5 points.

Dans cette série à quatre, on note la belle performance de Paul qui comme Pablo placent 2 vagues au dessus de 5 points. Simon ne se laisse pas démonter et prend autant de vagues que Paul mais Andre Burger manifeste sa supériorité et score deux bonnes vagues. Simon est donc envoyé en repêche.

Dernière série de ce premier tour New Age, nos deux gwadas frappent fort et terminent tous deux premiers leur assurant une place au tour suivant. Virgile score la deuxième plus belle vague de nos français en compétition aujourd'hui avec 8,67 au compteur. Une deuxième à 6,83 le donne vainqueur. 

C'est au tour des Ondines maintenant de montrer qu'en waveski, les filles peuvent aussi assurer. Peu d'entre elles ont fait le déplacement mais nos trois compétitrices françaises ont donné tout leur possible. Il s'agit de Nathalie Bonnan, Coralie Jousset et Elise Gaborit, réparties de la manière suivante : 

Heat 1 : Sandra Pienaar - Lucy Garbutt - Nathalie Bonnan

Heat 2 : Melissa Hardy - Coralie Jousset - Tracey Sassen

Heat 3 : Jackie Dillon - Elise Gaborit - Shannon Copeland

Dans la première série, c'est Sandra Pienaar et Lucy Garbutt qui se qualifient pour le prochain tour. On retrouvera notre française Nathalie Bonnan aux repêchages. 

Qui a dit que les filles ne savaient pas surfer ? Notre française Coralie Jousset se hisse à la deuxième place et s'octroie au passage la meilleure vague de la série. Plus régulière, Melissa Hardy cumule un score total de 12,07, seulement 0,7 points de plus que notre frenchie. 

Troisième et dernière série pour les filles, où Elise s'est battue jusqu'au bout mais cela sera finalement les repêches. Jackie Dillon a su trouver la vague qui la mènera au tour suivant notée 7 points. Shannon Copeland ne s'en sort pas brillament mieux que notre française, elle se qualifie avec juste 0,7 points de plus.

Intéressons-nous maintenant aux Juniors, catégorie encore moins représentée que les filles, une première ! Avec seulement 6 participants, cela laisse le champs libre pour atteindre les phases finales à nos deux frenchies, Nathan Le Bars et Maxime Gaborit. 

Heat 1 : Maxime Gaborit - Liam Smith - Shannon Copeland

Heat 2 : Nathan Le Bars - Duran Martin - Tian Podges

Dans cette première série, Liam Smith s'impose gentillement en scorant une vague à 5 et une autre à 6,83. Notre frenchie Maxime Gaborit n'a pas démérité et finit deuxième avec un total à plus de 10. Pas de soucis pour lui, il est qualifié pour le prochain tour (apparemment, la qualification n'aboutit pas à la finale, plus d'infos dans les jours qui viennent). 

Seconde et dernière série Juniors, où Nathan Le Bars s'impose en scorant la plus belle vague du premier tour Junior ainsi que la troisième plus belle de la journée (la première est de Renan à 8.9) ! Il se qualifie donc pour la suite, ses adversaires n'ayant scoré que des vagues en dessous de 5. 

Et pour finir, la catégorie Seniors où 3 français évoluent, Renan Leloutre, Mathieu Babarit et Julien Brohan.

Pour la première série, ce sont Michael Orsmond et Schalk Van Wyk qui se qualifient. Pour la deuxième, Ben John et Antony Stott.

 

Nos français n'ont pas eu de chance et sont tombés tous les trois dans la même série. Renan Leloutre a simplement survolé sa série s'octroyant deux superbes vagues notées 8 et 8.9 ! Tout juste derrière, Mathieu atteint le très honorable score de 12 avec deux vagues au dessus de 5. Malheureusement pour lui, Julien Brohan est relégué aux repêchages. 

C'est au terme de cette matinée que l'organisation décide de stopper la compétition aujourd'hui ne lançant pas les Open à cause de trop petites conditions. Dommage car quelques heures après, des vagues quasiment parfaites sont venues frapper la plage Nord de Durban. Trop tentant pour nos français qui se sont fait une bonne free session.

Plus tard dans la soirée, s'est tenue l'Assemblée Générale de la World Waveski Surfing Association où le nouveau bureau a été voté ainsi que le prochain pays organisateur des mondiaux 2016. 

Le nouveau bureau se compose donc de :

- Jackie Dillon à la présidence, 

- Doug Copeland au secrétariat, 

- Steve Farthing à la trésorerie 

- Marty McCane, Renan Leloutre, Gus Presa, Luis Pedro à la vice-présidence

- Steve Farthing à la gestion web

- Pablo Arrouays au développement 

Et le pays organisateur des mondiaux 2016 est ... le Portugal ! 

Le call est annoncé à 8h30 demain matin pour les premières séries du top 32 de l'Open ainsi que le premier tour des catégories Masters et Grand Masters !

This is undoubtedly the most awaited event of the year. The appointment is given to Durban from April 26 to May 4, the best international competitors. Three years after those of Santa Cruz in Portugal, which had been a success , it is for ten days each attempt to fly to the finals.

Sunday, April 27

It's still under the beautiful South African sun, but small conditions, that the appointment was given at 7:30 am for a debrief. Eventually the competition is postponed at 9am and are not Open initially planned which will open this new day but the categories Juniors , Seniors, Womens and New Age .

In New Ages, six of our French competed : Pablo Arrouays, Coralie Jousset, Paul Jouet, Simon Guastella, Virgile Humbert and Clément Guilbert, distributed as follows, where the first two of each heat advance to the next round and the losers will go to the repercharges.

Heat 1: Pablo Arrouays - Coralie Jousset - Stefano Bellotti

Heat 2: Andre Burger - Paul Toy - Adolph Van Zyl - Simon Guastella 

Heat 3 : Virgile Humbert - Clément Guilbert - Sam Jones - Bradley Cawcutt

Pablo qualifies for the next round but Coralie goes to the reperches. The battle occurred between our canaulais and the Italian Stefano Bellotti, but it's no surprise that Pablo dominates this heat by scoring two waves with more than 5 points.

In this heat four, we note the good performance of Paul as Pablo put two waves above 5 points. Simon is not allowed to disassemble and take the same numbers of waves than Paul but Andre Burger shows its superiority and score two good waves. Simon is gone to the repercharges.

Last heat of the first round New Age, our two gwadas hit hard and finish all first two giving them a place in the next round. Virgile score the second wave of our finest French in competition today with 8.67 points. A second 6.83 gives him winner.

It is now the turn of the Womens to show that in waveski, girls can also provide. Few of them have made the trip but our three French competitors gave their utmost. This is Nathalie Bonnan, Coralie Jousset and Elise Gaborit , distributed as follows :

Heat 3 : Jackie Dillon - Elise Gaborit - Shannon Copeland 

In the first heat, this is Sandra Pienaar and Lucy Garbutt who qualifies for the next round. We find our French Nathalie Bonnan in the repercharges .

Who says girls don't know how to surf ? Our Frenchie Coralie Jousset moved up to second place and have the best wave of the heat. More regular, Melissa Hardy accumulated a total score of 12.07, only 0.7 points higher than our frenchie.

Third and final heat for girls, where Elise fought to the end but it will eventually recovered. Jackie Dillon was able to find the wave that will lead to the next round scored 7 points. Shannon Copeland didn't come out brilliantly better than our Frenchie, she qualified with just 0.7 points high.

Let us now the Juniors category still represented less than girls, a first ! With only 6 competitors, this leaves the field open to reach the finals in both our Frenchies, Nathan Le Bars and Maxime Gaborit .

Heat 1 : Maxime Gaborit - Liam Smith - Shannon Copeland

Heat 2 : Nathan Le Bars - Martin Duran - Tian Podges

In this first heat, Liam Smith is required kindly by scoring a wave 5 and another at 6.83. Our Frenchie Maxime Gaborit wasn't unworthy and finished second with a total of more than 10. No worries, he qualified for the next round (apparently the qualification doesn't lead to the final, more informations in the coming days).

Second and final Juniors heat, where Nathan Le Bars win by scoring the best wave of the first round Junior and the third best of the day (the first is Renan 8.9) ! It therefore qualifies for the future, his opponents have scored only waves below to 5.

And finally, the Seniors category where three French evolve, Renan Leloutre, Mathieu Babarit and Julien Brohan .

For the first heat, it's Michael Orsmond and Schalk Van Wyk who are qualify. For the second, Ben John and Antony Stott .

Our Frenchies had no chance and fell all three in the same heat. Renan Leloutre simply flew over his heat having two great waves rated 8 and 8.9 ! Just behind Mathieu who reached the very respectable score of 12 with two waves above 5. Unfortunately for him, Julien Brohan is relegated to the repercharges.

This is the end of this morning. The organization decided to stop the competition today, the Open willl not running because of too small conditions. Too bad because a few hours later, almost perfect waves came knocking the Durban North Beach. Too tempting for our Frenchies who have made a good free session.

Later in the evening , was held the General Assembly of the World Waveski Surfing Association where the new committee was voted as the next host country of the 2016 World Waveski Surfing Titles.

And the host country of the 2016 WWST is ... Portugal !

The call is announced at 8:30 tomorrow morning for the first heats of the top 32 Open and the first round of the Masters and Grand Masters categories !
